As a Production Designer / Engineer, you will be a key technical contributor responsible for producing design deliverables (plans, specifications, details) for roadway and transportation projects. You will work closely with project managers, senior engineers, and regulatory agencies to translate conceptual designs into detailed construction documents that meet industry standards, client requirements, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed roadway design drawings, including horizontal/vertical alignment, profiles, cross sections, grading, drainage, and earthwork
  • Prepare signing, pavement marking, signage, and pavement layout plans
  • Design and detail traffic signal and lighting plans, conduit routing, pole foundations, and related electrical components
  • Produce plan sets, detail sheets, intersections, and roadway typical sections
  • Perform quantity take-offs and cost estimation for design packages
  • Coordinate with peer engineers, designers, surveyors, and CAD/drafting teams to integrate design components
  • Review and check drawings from junior designers/technicians for quality, standards compliance, and constructability
  • Assist in addressing agency comments, regulatory review feedback, and permitting documentation
  • Maintain version control, drawing revisions, and deliverable logs
  • Apply industry standards, specifications, and design regulations (e.g. FDOT, AASHTO, MUTCD, local roadway standards)
  • Support construction phase questions (RFI responses, detail clarifications) as needed
  • Stay current with design software, best practices, and emerging tools or techniques

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related discipline
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe (preferred)
  • Strong experience (e.g. 3+ years) in transportation / roadway design, signal/lighting design, and plan production
  • Proficiency in design and drafting software such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent
  • Experience with roadway design calculations, alignment geometry, grading, drainage, and earthworks
  • Knowledge of signalization, conduit layout, lighting design, and electrical plan work
  • Familiarity with DOT standards (preferably Florida DOT), AASHTO guidelines, local agency requirements, and permitting processes
  • Strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and ability to produce accurate, high-quality work under deadlines
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to manage multiple design tasks and handle project priorities

Desired Skills & Attributes

  • Experience with traffic impact studies and signal timing coordination
  • Familiarity with GIS, roadway modeling, and hydraulic modeling
  • Understanding of environmental permitting constraints, utility coordination, and drainage design
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and guide CAD/drafting workflows

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Reports to the Director of Engineering or Project Manager
  • Works closely with project managers, lead engineers, CAD/drafters, permitting teams, and occasionally directly with clients or agency reviewers
